Carswell
Preserved through careful stewardship.
The Carswell House stands as one of the earliest grand residences in the region, a historic home whose architecture and setting have remained largely unchanged for generations. Built in the nineteenth century, the house reflects the scale, craftsmanship, and quiet dignity of the period in which it was constructed. From its red brick exterior and steep gables to the tall windows and deep verandas, the structure was designed with both presence and practicality in mind. The house once overlooked working farmland and served as a gathering place for family, guests, and community life. Over time it became a local landmark, known not only for its architecture but for the enduring character of the property itself.Today, The Carswell House remains carefully preserved as a private heritage home. Its rooms, corridors, and grounds continue to reflect the design language and materials of its original era.
tHE HOUSE TODAY
Today The Carswell House continues its life as a carefully maintained heritage property. While private in nature, the home has opened its doors to photographers, artists, and select creative projects.
These visits allow the house to be documented and interpreted through contemporary work while preserving its character and atmosphere. Each collaboration contributes to a growing visual record of the property and its spaces.
Stewardship
Over the past twenty five years, The Carswell House has undergone a thoughtful and careful restoration. The intention was not to alter the character of the home, but to preserve and maintain it for the future.
Much of the original craftsmanship remains intact. Plaster walls and ceilings, detailed woodwork, and original window structures continue to define the interior spaces. Morning light still moves through the tall windows much as it would have when the house was first built. Sections of the original metal roofing also remain in place.
Modern systems have been introduced with restraint. Updated plumbing and electrical infrastructure ensure the home functions comfortably while preserving its architectural integrity. The front veranda has been rebuilt according to its original design, restoring an important feature of the façade and returning a space that has long served as a place to sit and observe the surrounding grounds.
The kitchen has been repainted in recent years, introducing a simple country palette that complements the older materials of the home. In many rooms, early carpets and flooring remain visible, carrying the marks of time and continued use.
The Carswell House stands as both a preserved historic residence and a place of continued creative work.
Within its rooms and across its grounds, the house remains open to the artists, photographers and visitors whose work will shape its next chapter.
